What is the significance and relevance of this story to last days prophecy?

The land of Israel belongs to God. And God has promised to restore a remnant of Jews to that land. And Jerusalem is God's holy city. Jesus Christ will return to earth to set up His kingdom from Jerusalem. It is not God's will for a Palestinian state to be established on His land.

The Antichrist will make a seven-year treaty with Israel. He will then break the treaty after 42 months and set himself up as a god to be worshiped in the Temple.

"Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate." Daniel 9:27

Unless Bush and Powell have aspirations of becoming the Antichrist I would suggest they stay out of negotiations in the Middle East. We should stand by Israel and if that offends Islam, so be it.

God said to Abram, "I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." Genesis 12:2-3
